    Finding Joy everyday

    Stephen’s Road to Recovery

Stephen Blackman has been part of the DARE community for 12 years, living at our Macquarie Rd house. After enduring months of pain, he recently underwent hip surgery. Now on the path to recovery, Stephen is returning to the activities he loves. One of his biggest milestones has been getting back to lawn care, a weekly task he took great pride in. During his recovery, his Key Worker, Chris Roorda, helped him find other engaging activities, but Stephen’s determination to resume his outdoor routine remained strong.

Alongside his love for maintaining the garden, Stephen has rediscovered his passion for building Lego planes, spending focused sessions assembling intricate models. His journey back to health is a testament to his resilience and the dedicated support of the DARE team. The strong sense of community at Macquarie Rd has played a key role in his recovery, ensuring he remains engaged, supported, and empowered every step of the way.

    FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

    Supported Independent Living (SIL)

What is Supported Independent Living (SIL)?

Supported Independent Living (SIL) provides adults with disabilities the opportunity to live independently in shared homes, with support available for daily tasks such as cooking, cleaning, and personal care. SIL accommodations are designed to foster independence, community engagement, and a safe living environment.

    Who is SIL suitable for?

SIL is ideal for individuals with disabilities who require daily support but can live in a shared environment with others. It may not suit everyone, as other options like SDA or ILO may better align with some individuals’ needs and preferences. Your Support Coordinator will advise on this and assist with your NDIS funding for SIL.

How do I apply for SIL or other disability accommodation services?

To apply for SIL or other accommodations, start by contacting DARE Disability Support. Our Support Coordination team can guide you through the process, helping you explore your options, understand your NDIS plan, and determine your eligibility for specific services.

What types of disability accommodation does DARE Disability Support provide?

DARE Disability Support offers a variety of options tailored to individual needs, including:
    • Supported Independent Living (SIL): Shared homes with support staff to assist with everyday tasks.
    • Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA): Homes built with advanced accessibility features for individuals with complex needs.
    • Independent Living Options (ILO): Flexible arrangements that may include living alone, with family, or with housemates, while receiving tailored support.

    What are SIL vacancies?

SIL vacancies are available rooms in shared homes designed for people with disabilities who need support to live independently. These homes provide a safe, welcoming environment with staff on-site to assist residents with their daily needs and to foster independence.

How does DARE Disability Support help with SIL?

At DARE, we provide a person-centred approach to SIL. From understanding your unique needs to finding the right home and housemates, we work with you to ensure the accommodation aligns with your lifestyle and goals. Our support includes assistance with everyday tasks, fostering community connections, and helping you build a fulfilling, independent life.

How does the NDIS fund SIL and other disability accommodations?

The NDIS (National Disability Insurance Scheme) provides funding to eligible participants to access suitable accommodation options, including SIL and SDA. This funding can cover the costs of support staff, housing modifications, and specialised services, ensuring participants can achieve their goals for independence and a comfortable living environment.

What are the benefits of Supported Independent Living?

    SIL offers:
    • A safe and supportive home environment.
    • Assistance with daily tasks to promote independence.
    • Opportunities for social engagement with housemates.
    • Support tailored to individual needs and goals.

    Rewarding NDIS Work

    Building Strong Connections

Being part of the DARE Family means collaboration and building strong connections with the people we care for. I’m inspired by the individuals we support, helping them experience new things or continue doing what they love while providing person-centred support to build and maintain their independence. It’s incredibly rewarding.
